Dates: Wednesday, June 24th and Wednesday, July 8th from 11:30 AM-1 PM
Level: Confident Beginner (comfortable with knit, purl, binding on, and binding off). Bring a curious and adventurous attitude, and a willingness to redo sections of knitwork as trial and error.
Join knitter Sarah Langford in a fun two part class to learn the endlessly customizable art of log cabin knitting! Log cabin knitting is a modular, beginner-friendly technique that builds square garter-stitch blocks from the center out, typically using alternating colors to create geometric patterns. It’s a scrap friendly technique that you can use to create anything from sweaters to blankets to cowls (it’s really only limited by your imagination).
This is a technique class with an eye towards applying log cabin knitting towards designing your own garment!
Skills:
choosing colors
picking up stitches
improvisational garment construction
Materials:
DK yarn remnants for a scrappy look (they would ideally be the same weight and fiber content) OR buy two to three skeins and alternate colors.
US 8 (5mm) needles or similar to match gauge on your yarn. You will need at least 1 pair. (If you happen to have four pairs of size 8s on circular, you can learn a new technique with them during this class, but it is not a must if you don’t have them already)
If you want to make a garment, you will need more yarn of the same weight. You can discuss this in person with Sarah during the course of the class.
Homework
Before the first class, knit a square in garter stitch. This will be your center square. Do not cast off. Make it to your preference, or cast on 16 and knit until it is a square. In some traditions of log cabin quilting, the artisan placed the color red at the center to represent the warmth of the hearth. You may choose any color you like!
