FAQs

Do you have an entrance without stairs?

Yes! To access it, take a right after the golf course as you’re going up Clairmont Avenue and take the first left to drive into the alley behind General and Shoppe. There is a small parking lot behind the greenhouse. Park there, and give us a call at 205-538-5246 so that we can let you in through our locked back door.

I want to learn to knit/crochet! Where do I start?

We love our small group classes! There’s nothing quite like learning with others under a great teacher to offer feedback and guidance. We also offer private lessons. If you would prefer to learn through the internet, VeryPinkKnits on Youtube, Brooklyn Tweed, and Purl Soho are great resources for new and experienced knitters.

If you would prefer to learn through books, Knitting Tips and Techniques is an excellent spiral bound book recommended in our 101 classes for visual reference. Skill Set: Beginning Knitting is also a fantastic book that is printed by MDK. All of these books are available at Knit B’ham.

How do I register for a class?

We would be delighted to see you for our classes! To sign up, scroll to the classes section of our website and choose your dates, then check out to reserve your spot. We are also happy to register you on the phone if you give us a call.

We put out more classes all the time, so if something is full, we’ll likely offer it again. But feel free to let us know if you are interested in a specific time and we will put you on the waitlist for if someone drops out.

How do I sign up for a private lesson, and how much do they cost?

Call us and let us know that you’re interested in a private lesson with one of our instructors. We will ask you some general times of day/days of the week where you are available, what you’re interested in learning, and pass on your contact information to the teacher we believe to be the best match. Your instructor will reach out to you directly to coordinate a time. Private lessons are $30 for 30 minutes, and $60 for 1 hour, which is paid to the shop prior to your lesson.

Do y’all teach kids?

100%. We typically recommend a 30 minute private lesson for kiddos since hour and a half group classes are typically not a great match for young attention spans. We do offer group classes for children, and will specify in the class title!

What materials do you recommend for a beginner?

We love beginners! At the start, we recommend focusing on getting the hang of your basic stitches with materials that are thicker and lighter in color so that they are easier to see.

Beginning Crochet:

A size G hook and a worsted weight yarn in a light color is all that you need to get started. We specifically recommend (and use in our classes): KnitPro Waves 2.0 crochet hooks, and a skein of Cascade 220 SWM.

Focus on learning: how to make a slip knot, chain stitch, single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, and treble crochet stitches.

Beginning Knitting:

A size 10 straight bamboo needle, a chunky weight yarn in a light color, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. We specifically recommend (and use for our 101 classes): KnitPro beech basix straight needles in US 10, Cascade Yarns 128 SWM, and Susan Bates tapestry needles with a big eye for fitting your yarn into.

Focus on learning: how to make a slip knot, casting on with the knitted cast on, knit stitch, purl stitch, and casting off with any method.

Does Knit B’ham do special orders for yarn?

Yes, please inquire with us if interested. We only make special orders from brands and lines we already carry, and aren’t able to offer special orders for sale yarns. The yarn must be paid for prior to ordering. We will call you when it arrives!

Do y’all take commissions to make knitted or crocheted items?

We don’t, sorry! But we do offer repairs on handmade knitted or crocheted items.

Do you guys offer gift cards?

Absolutely! To get a gift card with us, pop into the store or give us a call.
