Introduction to Tunisian Crochet
Dates: Saturday, February 14th and 28th from 12:30 PM- 2 PM
Instructor: Helen Tankersley
Level: Intermediate
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Crochet 101 or be comfortable with following stitches: slip knot, chain (ch), yarn over (yo), and slip stitch (sl st).
Do you want to make accessories that look like they’re knit - all using a single crochet hook? Love the look of knitting but can’t quite wrangle two needles? Or maybe you’re ready to explore a new fiber technique? Discover the joys of Tunisian crochet with this class! Tunisian crochet, also known as the Afghan Stitch, makes a firm fabric using a longer hook.
Made with a tool that is cross between a crochet hook and a knitting needle, Tunisian crochet adds great texture to your projects and will take you further into the exciting world of crochet!
During this class, you will make the Medusa Earwarmer by Ruth Brasch, an approachable and cute twisted earwarmer pattern that comes together quickly and is perfect for learning the basics of Tunisian. You can choose to make it in two contrast colors, or one color.
Sizes
Child (Adult Narrow, Adult Wide)
Finished Measurements
3.5 (4, 4.5)” / 9 (10, 11) cm wide, laid flat; length is adjustable to the wearer’s head circumference
Yarn Substitution
The designer recommends using a yarn that will feel soft against the ears, face, and back of neck. She uses a wool yarn for her sample. This pattern is great for leftover or partial skeins, as the largest size only uses 50g of each color of yarn. You could easily also hold two strands of fingering weight yarn double to meet the DK gauge.
Color Choice
The sample is shown in two high-contrast colors, but you can make it with any number of colors or combination you choose. You could even work from the inside and outside of a single caked skein for a one-color earwarmer. The combinations and color choices are endless!
Materials:
The Medusa Earwarmer pattern, purchased online from Ravelry and printed (if you show us proof of pattern purchase, we are happy to print the pattern for you)
One double ended Tunisian crochet hook- each side must be be a size J (6.0mm) (if not purchasing your hook from us, please be sure you have the same size hook on both ends!)
A normal, single ended non-tunisian crochet hook in size F (3.75mm).
DK or light worsted weight yarn
Tapestry needle
Please come in prior to class to purchase your materials and have yarn wound if needed!
